What would you do if..

What would you do as a teacher if your student handed in something like this....

Or something like this...

Would you grade them down?

  1. In these particular cases, I would grade the student down just to be fair to other students who did the same problems. However, I would use this as an indication that I need to find a new way to reach this student because they have some sort of creative potential that is not being taken advantage of in my class. That may be difficult in math or physics, but any alternative assignments that would allow this student to use their skills to relate to content could work.

  2. I looked at the first one and laughed, but then i thought. What if the student didn't understand the question and really thought we asked to "find on the page x" Obviously it's a joke, but if we pretend it's not. I think before grading down a student we need to really investigate why the student answered that way. If the student was seriously confused then we need to look at the directions given and the students level of understanding. This could be the biggest cry for help but we as teachers could be frustrated with the answer and just consider that the student "was messing around"

I agree Andy, with what you said about the second way and seeing that the student is creative and maybe having the student's creativity come more to life in the classroom.
